History of Wesley Football Club

Old Wesley Amateur Football Club (1966 - 1989)

The Old Wesley Amateur Football club was founded in 1966 by Arthur Marshall, Stuart Joint and Roger Burrows.

The Club commenced in 'D' Grade of that year and went on to win the premiership. Arthur Marshal coached the team whilst also performing the duties of president of the club.

1967

1968
 
A second side 'E' Grade was added and the top side promoted to 'B' Grade.

1969
 
Unfortunately due to lack of numbers the club dropped back to only one side.
However the constitution was the amended to allow "non ex- Wesleyans" to play.

1970
 
The club was now back to two sides ('B' and 'F' Grades).

1971
 
Our first move! The club moved from the College to Collins Oval.
Teams 'B' and 'F' Grades.

1972
 
Establishment of 'B' colts and the 'B' Grade lost the Grand Final to University, but were promoted to 'A' Grade. B. Nelson wins 'B' Grade leading goal kicker award.

1973
 
The club comprised of 'A' league, 'A' reserve and 'A' colts - very tough times!

The addition of a fourth side 'E' Grade. Competition still very tough!

Club still comprised of 'A', 'A' Reserve, 'A' Colts and 'E' Grade.

1976  
The league dropped the 'reserve' format and our teams lined up as follows:
'A' Grade, 'A' Colts, 'D' and 'G' Grade.
Mike Petkovich wins competition 'D' Grade fairest and best.

'D' Grade: M. Petkovich
'G' Grade: C. Heath

1977  
Times still hard! 'D' Grade relegated to 'F' Grade and 'G' to 'H' Grade.
However numbers still strong.
Greg St Quintin wins club fairest and best for second year in a row.

Steve Arnott arrives! Things improve.
Neil (Choc) Browne becomes Club's first life member.
Ian (Whompa) McCarry wins 'A' Colts competition Fairest and Best award.
'A' grade loses in preliminary final.
Brynn Chute, Alec Gryta and Greg Higham selected in State side.

1979  
'F' Grade promoted to 'E' Grade. Club continues to be a strength.
'A' Grade loses in Preliminary Final again. 'E' Grade loses 1st Semi-Final.

Brynn Chute becomes an ALL Australian Amateur.

1980
 
One of the most successful years.
'A' Grade minor premiers but lost to Nollamara in Grand Final.
Club moves to Leederville Sporting Club for social events.

1981
 
'A' Grade finishes 5th with 12 wins and 'E' Grade loses Grand Final.
Nick Belyea appointed Captain of State side which included Gerard Hunt and Tony Power.
Tony Power wins 'A' Grade goal kicking award. 'E' Grade promoted to 'D' Grade.

1982  
'A' Grade and 'C' Colts finish in the four. Unfortunately both sides lost in first Semi-Final:
'A' Grade to eventual premiers Old Scotch. Ken Duffy named Vice Captain of State side.
Andrew Bockman wins 'A' Colts competition Fairest and Best.
Club moves to Civic Centre Bowling Club for social events.
Mick Davy becomes first player to play 200 games and also becomes the second
Life Member of the Club.

1983  
'A' Grade wins Elimination Final but fails to go on. 'A' Colts loses Elimination Final.

Ken Pride wins 'A' competition goal kicking award by bagging 100 goals.

A more consistent year - 'A' Grade with seven wins.
'H's' "Heroes" gain some media exposure!

Craig Walker becomes a life member.

Merger with Trinity-Aquinas fails! Barrie Quick arrives.
'A' Grade finishes 3rd and loses Grand Final to Mt Lawley.
No more 'H' Grade. Club moves to South Perth Bowling Club for social clubrooms.

1988 
'A' Grade finishes 4th but loses to University in Elimination Final.
'F' Grade also loses in Elimination Final.

Glen Walker and Brett Banting play 200 games.

'A' Grade fails to finish in the finals.
'F' Grade plays in Grand Final but loses to West Coast.

Peter Cutler, Greg Chatfield and Andrew Bockman selected in State team.
Greg St Quentin, Greg Higham and Trevor Harris become life members.
